Destination Do’s: Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day weekend is a holiday fave for us at Nekter because it’s a kick start to warmer temps with Saturdays at the beach, bike rides by the bay, and bonfires in the sand. It’s the start of summer! So what better way to celebrate than with a weekend getaway? We’ve got that Cali fever seeing as how our roots are in soCal so we’ve rounded up our favorite Memorial Day destination do’s in the Golden state.

Newport Beach: One of our favorite cities in Southern California. If you’re with the family, friends, or if it’s just a couples getaway there’s plenty to do in one weekend. Rent an electric boat and cruise the harbor. When you’re ready for a break you can dock and dine at one of the restaurants on the water. We recommend Sol Cocina for delicious Mexican cuisine. The hiking trails are photo worthy and if you visit Crystal Cove State Park, head over to The Beachcomber for eats and drinks. It’s perched up right on the sand so while you wait to be seated you can take a quick stroll along the beach. Castaways Park and Lookout Point are both beautiful beaches to prop your umbrella, lay out a towel and relax under the sun.

Lake Tahoe: May is one of the best months to visit Lake Tahoe. Temps are warmer during the days but still a little chilly in the evenings so you can cozy up by a fire at night after a day in the sun. King’s Beach is great for the family with paddle boarding, kayaking, and parasailing being on the top to do’s there. Plus there’s plenty of options in dining, shopping and nightlife. Rent some bikes, go for a hike or spend a few hours golfing…any way you do it you’re bound to have a blast.

San Francisco: Whether you drive up the coast or hop on a quick flight, the Bay Area is a beautiful weekend getaway to unofficially welcome summer. If you haven’t had a picnic in Dolores Park now’s your chance. Take a stroll through Hayes Valley where you’ll find the quaintest coffee shops like Blue Bottle Coffee, the yummiest ice cream, and unique boutiques. The city can be a busy place so make sure to take a 20 minute drive over to Sausalito where the weather is a little warmer. Or you can visit Fisherman’s Wharf and take a ferry over to Sausalito and rent bikes for a ride along the shoreline.

Malibu Wines: Ditch the beach bags and pack a picnic because you’re going wine tasting! Tucked away in the hills of Malibu off of Mulholland Drive, nestled in a picture-perfect landscape lies Malibu Wines. It’s a beautiful ranch that offers live music, a handsome selection of wine tastings, and an open area for you and friends to bring the perfect picnic essentials. There’s plenty of seating from tables and chairs to an open grassy field and even a vintage school bus – yes a big yellow bus. The most instagram-able moments await.
