Odds are, your holiday indulgences already have you thinking up those New Year’s Resolutions…which means you’re inadvertently setting yourself up for failure as we speak. We all know that gym memberships and diet-plan sales spike come January, but studies have shown that 80% of us, no matter how well-intentioned, have ditched the resolutions by Valentine’s Day. Why? The excuses run the gamut from a lack of time to a loss of interest, and everything in between. The real reason most fail? Because what we really need to give us that goal-getting kick in the pants is a mental shift.
Let’s face it; a year is a long time. The thought of committing to something for that long can be overwhelming, and the chances of sticking to your resolutions day in and day out for 365 days straight are slim. Long-term goals are astronomically more effective when you break them up into smaller baby steps, which is precisely why we dreamed up the #dailyreset for the entire month of January, to help you kick off the new year with a new mindset. Pick a goal and stick with it for 24 hours. That’s it. Take your resolutions one day a time, and watch yourself achieve more than you ever thought possible.
You can convince yourself to commit to pretty much anything for 24 hours. One day without caffeine? Check! One day hitting the gym like a total boss? Done! One day of juice cleansing? Boom! And then maybe, just maybe, you can talk yourself into going for two days, then three; and then before you know it, you’ve stuck it out for a week! Each day is a new chance to make a contract with yourself to accomplish one simple goal. The more you train your brain to trust that you’ll stay true to your word and follow through on your daily promises, the more confidence and self-control you’ll build within yourself – essential components of long-term, sustainable goal achievement.
To guide you through this month, we’ve come up with a theme for you to focus on each week – a sort of framework to help inspire your daily resolutions and shift your mindset. This week, it’s all about the physical. Being physically healthy not only greatly reduces your chances of developing chronic illnesses like type 2 diabetes and heart disease, it also improves your quality of life in general, cutting down on aches and pains and providing you with the energy to power through your day. What big physical goals do you want to achieve? Wanna lose 30 pounds? Start small. Set a 24-hour goal to do little things like take the stairs instead of the elevator each morning at work, or replace your diet soda with water. When you’ve achieved your desired mindset shift, move on to another 24-hour goal. Each day’s small changes will eventually add up to big-time goal achievement, and you’ll be left with not only a tremendous sense of accomplishment, but also a brain that has been rewired to go the distance.
